I was going to start this post by saying that "as sure as Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow the Super Bowl Mutual Fund will...". But Phil obviously took the bribe and did not see his shadow this year which means an early spring is on his way.
For those who do not use a calendar with the words "Groundhog Day" in the little February 2nd square, you can go to the official Ground Hog Day site and get up to speed, and then watch Bill Murray get trapped in an endless loop with Andie MacDowell in the movie called, appropriately enough, Groundhog Day.
The real good news here is that I can find no correlation between Punxsutawney Phil's predictions and stock market returns. Let's all take a moment of silence and thank the great monkey in the sky for that.

Once again it goes to show that if the market goes up during the year, the Super Bowl Mutual Fund kills it...meaning that it does exceptionally well during that year. This mutual fund consists of a handful of companies that are willing to pay something like $3 million for 30 seconds of air time during the Super Bowl.
Let's look at the players from last year and the performance from February 2010 to February 2011:
Denny's (DENN), +55.6%
Disney (DIS), +34.7%
Honda Motors (HMC), +29.8%
Coca-Cola, (KO), +15.6%
E-Trade (ETFC), +13.5%
Anheuser-Busch (BUD), +10.7%
Pepsi, (PEP), +8.5%
Monster.Com (MWW), +1.3% (up 49%, Feb 2010 to Dec 2010)
There are more car companies advertising this year than in previous years, even GM...(your tax(ed) dollars at work) Reminds me of the time I took out a loan at a bank that actually made loans to monkeys. Jokingly, I asked if I could take out another loan to pay the original loan back. No wonder the loan officer didn't laugh. Turns out that it's common practice.
Leaving the majority of car companies out of the mutual fund, here is the list for 2011:
DIS, BUD, ETFC (that baby never gets old), GM (leaner, meaner and...and humans will fly out of my butt), BBY, PEP, KO, KMX, PG.
